THE COUNTDOWN

The Government withdrew its March 2026 decision to replace Suffolk's six councils with three unitary councils on 7 September 2026, pending a review. The councils' joint Local Government Reorganisation page continues to state that district and borough council elections in Suffolk will take place in May 2027 on existing council boundaries, that the planned shadow unitary council elections will not go ahead, and that plans for devolution, including the election of a mayor for Suffolk and Norfolk in 2028, are continuing.

The Vesting Day set by the withdrawn decision, 1 April 2028, is 541 days away; that date is suspended while the review takes place, and no revised timetable has been published.

This week: no new announcements on the councils' joint page.
