THE COUNTDOWN
In March 2026 the government decided that Greater Essex's fifteen councils would be replaced by five unitary councils, one of which would have covered Brentwood, Chelmsford and Maldon. On 7 September 2026 the government withdrew that decision in light of new legal advice and began a review of its reorganisation programme. Local elections in May 2027 will go ahead on existing council boundaries. No date has been set for new councils in Essex.
No Essex reorganisation publication from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government was found for 28 September to 4 October. In Brentwood, Council's draft minutes of 23 September record a resolution to defer any change to the Ingatestone & Fryerning and Mountnessing parish boundary until the review is complete (see IN THE CHAMBER). Essex County Council's meetings calendar notes that reorganisation could see the county council abolished in 2028, with its next elections scheduled for 2 May 2030.
