HOW IT WORKS
WHAT IS PERMISSION IN PRINCIPLE?
Permission in principle is an alternative way of obtaining planning permission for housing-led development. It separates the consideration of matters of principle from the technical detail of the development. There are two stages: the first establishes whether a site is suitable in principle, and the second, technical details consent, is when the detailed proposals are assessed. After a grant of permission in principle, the site must receive a grant of technical details consent before development can proceed, and that grant has the effect of granting planning permission. Householder development and major development cannot be given permission in principle following an application.
