JOINT OVERVIEW AND SCRUTINY COMMITTEE CONSIDERS HOUSING SOLUTIONS ANNUAL REPORT

The Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee met on 17 August and considered the Housing Solutions Annual Report. Members did not agree a recommendation to explore short-term and fixed-term tenancy contracts and house-share arrangements. They agreed recommendations to support tenants to downsize where appropriate, to develop a plan to increase the supply of one-bedroom properties ahead of Local Government Reorganisation, and to examine the risks associated with declining landlord engagement in the Central Suffolk Lettings scheme and the use of bed and breakfast accommodation for temporary housing.

DID YOU KNOW?

The bells that were only temporary Work began on a bell tower at St Mary the Virgin church in East Bergholt in 1525, with the backing of Cardinal Wolsey. His fall from grace brought construction to a halt in 1530, and a wooden bell cage was erected the following year as a temporary measure. It is still there. The bells — the heaviest set still rung in England, over four tonnes — are pushed by hand by ringers standing beside them. The temporary solution has now lasted nearly 500 years.
